What Does it Mean to be
Truly Spiritual
By: Jeremiah Baldizan

So what does it mean to be truly spiritual or holy?

Some men believe it means that the moment a man believes, he is righteous, and completely without sin.  I strongly disagree with this doctrine as I have yet to see a verifiable sinless Christian outside of heaven.  My stance is the same as Charles Spurgeon’s, “The holier a man becomes, the more he mourns over the unholiness which remains in him.”  I have found great consolation in the Words of Christ, ““Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt 5:3 ESV).  I believe any man can outwardly appear very spiritual, for example you can be familiar with the scriptures, evangelize, pray, and be thought of as holy, but I believe the true test of a man’s spirituality is going to be more that skin deep.  After all we serve a God who says “I am He who searches the minds and hearts.” (Rev 2:23 NKJV).

A true believer will be in a violent pursuit of His kingdom and His righteousness (see Matt 6:33) as the Apostle Paul says, “I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air…” (1 Cor 9:6). However, true spirituality is to be intoxicated with the wine of God’s love.  To be consumed with a passion for God’s glory, His great name, and His will.  Our heart cry is not “I have too…” but “I delight to do Your will, O my God” (Psalm 40:8).

As the puritan Thomas Watson said, “…to be carried in a fiery chariot of love to God.” and our King said the greatest commandment is, “And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” (Matt 12:30 NKJV).
