Your Gentleness Has Made Me Great!
By: Jeremiah Baldizan
“Your gentleness has made me great.” (Psalm 18:35)
What a beautiful song of thanksgiving by King David as he ascended to the throne, after years of flight from King Saul. David was no doubt was the most virtuous king in his day being a man after God’s own heart (see Acts 13:22). What a perfect picture of the life of a Christian as he is chosen by God, born again with a new heart, and chosen to obey God in his appointed trials. Just as a Christian’s loyal to God is seen as insurrection against the throne of the ruler of this world, King Saul despised David for his loyalty to his God. David was despised, rejected and put to flight, but in the end it was God who gave him his majesty and greatness, because the text says, your gentleness has made me great. In every victory it is the humble souls boast. Your gentleness has made me great! When a man stands on the high mountain of success, like King Saul it is in the fallen nature of man to boast of ourselves. If this is you may God cast you down and set up another. A man that is has been regenerated has a new boast, in his God and God alone. As Jesus said, “I seek not my own Glory” (John 8:50) exposing the false prophets that only seek their own. As for those who God lifts up, every regenerated redeemed saint will walk before the congregation of saints in heaven making his way before the throne. As all the saints of different ages look on with perfect love and intense admiration. The perfected saint who endured to the end, who stayed loyal to his King in an enemy domain, who forsook temporal pleasures with joy over another country, who endured reproach, who the world had no place for, and who shared in his King’s sufferings. Makes his way to the throne and he is confessed by his King to The Father, and the mighty armies of heaven. He is crowned with glory and honor, the tender mercies and loving kindness of his God. To him is given a linen robe and a crown of righteousness that never fades. Heaven rejoices as they hear the voice from the throne say, “Well done good and faith servant.” After the applause dies this humble saint lay down his crowns saying, “your gentleness has made me great! It was you Lord who made me endure, it was you Lord in every victory, it was you Lord who bore the dreadful curse, your gentleness has made me great!”
